The sponsorship program is the core program in GN Cambodia because this plays a vital role for funding source to ensure all sectoral programs (Education-child protection, Advocacy, Health and WaSH, Partnership and networking, and Income Generation) enable to layout its development program activities within the target area where GNC is working to serve the most vulnerable community, especially vulnerable children. Additionally, child case management is the activity that we need to take actions during the Covid-19 situation. GN Cambodia supported 52 children (17 girls) of whom 11 children (7 girls) received support from January to June 2021, particularly, Covid-19 response. In April 2021, three registered children infected the COVID-19 and were sent for healing at Covid-19 Treatment Center.

Phalla Menglong, boy, 9, a sponsored child who infected Covid-19, lives in Alongkong Village, Sangkat Preysar, Khan Dangkor, Phnom Penh capital city. To support him, GN Cambodia staff worked with Community Mobilizers, Community Development Committee, and local authorities to respond his urgent needs. The staff consulted and provided his families during household lockdown while they could not go outside for a 14-day quarantine. In the hard situation, GN Cambodia delivered the family food such as rice (25kg), some ingredients, and COVID-19 materials (1 box of masks, 2 alcohol gel sanitizers). On the other hand, we closely followed up their health even though they recovered from the disease by home visits and telephone calls in a weekly basis. “I’m very delighted to receive some materials and consultation, and thank you to GN Cambodia for kind consideration during this situation.”, said Menglong. He added, “Now I am able to study and play with my friends as usual”.

As of June 2021, after interviewed with RCs and their guardians, children recovered from their illness and they can enjoy their study (online), especially they can join the sponsorship programs such as the Annual Child Letter activities to their sponsors. “I am grateful to GN Cambodia for a big contribution to my family during Covid-19 difficulties, especially supporting the needy food items during the lock down.’’, said Menglong’s mother.
