Good Neighbors Cambodia (GNC) is implementing the project “Expansion of youth employment and income generation through a transportation cooperative (hereafter: “Good taxi project”).” It was started in 2018, but this year, we scaled it up and has provided more opportunity to generate income funded by Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).
This project aims to empower the youth by providing training related to transport business, a low-interest loan program for a lending tuk-tuk and improving the business environment by organizing and operating a cooperative in Dangkor.
We share project activities as follows.
1) Auto-rickshaw (Tuk-tuk) Handover to drivers
On August 25, 2022, GNC had an auto-rickshaw handover ceremony to distribute 20 auto-rickshaws out of 40 first. Mr. Jang Dongwon, Country Director of Good Neighbors Cambodia, Mr. Rho Hyunjun, Country Director of KOICA Cambodia office, and Mr. Tuy Chan, Deputy Governor of Khan Dangkor, attended the ceremony to celebrate it.
GNC provides tuk-tuk on a low-interest loan and hands over ownership if the drivers repay it within two years. Tuk-tuk will play a key role in reducing the local people’s unemployment rate and increasing income for their life.
Mr. Tuy Chan, Deputy Governor of Dangkor District, said that “We strongly support the Good Taxi Project on behalf of Dangkor District Hall, including local officials. This project had been recognized as a successful model project since 2019 and it helps improve the lives of local people to increase income for living and solve the problems of daily life, which has so far benefited 60 families.”
2) Training for drivers in 5 sectors.
On 16th-21st, July 2022, GNC provided training for 20 drivers on 5 subjects; 1) Traffic law and driving safety education 2) Vehicle maintenance 3) Gender Awareness 4) Customer Service (CS) 5) Financial literacy.
The training aims to 1) Strengthen the drivers’ abilities in the transportation business 2) Provide good service to passengers 3) Encourage people to manage their income and expenditure in the household 4) Improve gender awareness in society.
All the participants were satisfied with each of the training. One of the participants said, “The training was good. I’ve never had this kind of training. it was a beneficial and good experience for me”.
GNC will provide this training for 20 other drivers as well in upcoming September.
